“The post-career is going better than I imagined”

Switzerland celebrated Roger Federer on Sunday in Zurich. The man with 20 Grand Slam titles, retired from the courts since his last Laver Cup appearance in September 2022, received a lifetime achievement award at the Swiss sports awardsceremony organized in Switzerland, in Zurich.

This is the first time in 15 years that this honorary award has been presented. Roger Federer is the sixth person to receive it, after athlete Res Brugger (2001), cyclist Ferdi Kubler (2003), Swiss motorsport leader Peter Sauber (2005) and former federal councilor Adolf Ogi (2007).

Present in Zurich to receive his award, Roger Federer gave a speech before a large assembly, speaking in particular of his post-retirement, his many successes and his last match at the Laver Cup. The trophy was presented to him by Viola Amherd, Federal Councilor and Sports Minister.

Federer thanks the Swiss for their support

“I am happy to have made the transition following my retirement. It was something I feared. But it turned out better than I thought,” the man with 20 Grand Slam titles explained at the ceremony.

“More things have happened since I no longer play tennis, and above all I have no more excuses for declining an invitation. I can no longer say that I have a game, a training session, an injury, a rehabilitation to do. As a result, the requests are higher than when I was active.

“I have always been supported by my country, and that has really counted in my career. I’ve always been happy to get these seven sportsman of the year titles here. And being celebrated still today fills me with joy”.
