The end of Christian Streich’s career could soon become a reality. The 58-year-old sees his strength dwindling, as he admitted in an interview – he categorically ruled out a job at a club other than SC Freiburg.

Streich has been on the sidelines as head coach of the sports club since 2012; he has been associated with the club as a coach in various positions since 1995. But the Streich im Breisgau era may soon end. “I feel that I’m getting older. My strength is dwindling, it’s just foreseeable,” said Streich in an interview with “11 Freunde” about the possible end of his term in office.
“I find myself thinking more and more often: How much energy does the players have left?” the 58-year-old gave further insight into his thoughts. “And when I realize that it’s no longer enough and someone younger is needed to get to the players, I’ll stop.”
But that doesn’t seem to be the case at the moment. With four wins from eight games, Freiburg got off to a good start in the new season in the German upper house after the team of the longest-serving Bundesliga coach finished the league in fifth place in the previous season, reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup and the round of 16 in the Europa League had.
In March of this year, Streich extended his contract in Freiburg again. Although the association did not specify the term of the new working paper, it can be assumed that it has extended it by another year, as in previous years. He has often asked himself whether he still has enough energy for the intensive job. So far the answer has always been positive, but he wanted to reassess the situation every year, it was said at the time.
Coaching position at another club “no longer an option”
The fact that he is on the sidelines again at a club other than SC Freiburg is not an issue for Streich either way. “This is no longer an option for me,” he clarified. But you will still hear about Streich even after his coaching career ends.
“If someone asks me about my opinion on the AfD or the NPD, I’m happy to give them an answer,” said the coach when asked about his clear socio-political views. “Because I see it as my duty as a public figure to point out the dangers posed by such parties and their politicians.”
