The positive energy of Toulouse singer Gabryël

the essential
Complete artist and jack of all trades, the young Toulousain Gabryël continues his rise with a second title, “Sors de ce corps” which has just been released. A third will be revealed in May, ahead of the September release of a debut EP.

Meeting with Gabryël, a 26-year-old multi-instrumentalist with already well-established and promising talent.

How did music enter your life?

I was six years old, and I saw and listened to a symphony orchestra on TV. I was fascinated, especially by the violin, which I decided to study. I had this urgent need to learn! I started strumming a few small melodies and later a violin teacher introduced me to music theory and software for recording models. Later, I was taken to the Toulouse Conservatory, I who did not come at all from a classical cultural background.

You studied jazz and you listen to both Queen and Pavarotti: great eclecticism!

I love Freddy Mercury, Jeff Buckley, Robert Plant: vocal singers. I also like, it’s true, opera singers. I like the powerful voices, which go towards the highs and make vibrate. They carry dazzling emotions.

“Without anger”, released in November 2020, pinned complicated human relationships. Why this theme?

What I compose is the reflection of what I believe, what touches me, what I see or hear around me. And I happened to observe in relatives and friends tensions within the family or at work. A lack of communication, of explanation, of trying to see how to resolve these situations… The clip, which I co-directed with Aurélie Tambon, addresses these questions, but with a little lightness and humor…

With “Sors de ce corps”, you present another facet of your work, after the electropop of “Without anger” and you denounce the social masks behind which we hide …

I didn’t want to repeat myself, or to be locked in a category, and I did indeed want to show something else, while keeping a unity. This is another serious theme, which says that masks can hurt, and not only when you are young. At work, too, for example… There is a lot to say about this subject and I have done a lot of research, viewed reports and read articles on the subject of these masks and identities. However, my song is not a report, I just try to emphasize the emotional aspect, the part of hope and love. The idea is not to make you cry, but to create an emotional burst and send a wave of positive energy towards the listener.

How do you see the future: are you preparing the EP “live” scheduled for September?

I have a reduced formula in piano (or guitar) and voice in which I will try to integrate a little more electro. The goal is to keep these electropop colors. I miss playing live very much and I can’t wait to return to the halls!
