The port of Los Angeles begins the year with a 16% drop in containers

The Port of Los Angeles has registered 726,014 containers to start 2023, which meant a decrease of 16.1% compared to January of last year.

As in previous months, the decrease was generated by the contraction in the flow of full imported containers, which amounted to 372,000 TEUs (-12.9%), and by the reduction in the movement of empty containers, which amounted to 251,000 Teus (-25.7%). Full export containers increased by 2.5% to 103,000 teus.

In this sense, the executive director of the port of Los Angeles, Gene Seroka, stated that “we expect smoother global trade during the first quarter, particularly compared to the record start of last year.” Seroka acknowledged that many factories in Asia have had prolonged shutdowns over the Chinese New Year, with shippers continuing to remove goods from their full warehouses.
