“The population yearned for change”: Benoît Thoreau is the new mayor of Wavre, the MR sent to the opposition

In Wavre, an agreement between Les Engagés, the PS and Écolo removed the MR from power after a blockage at the level of “higher authorities”.

The Engaged list, which reached an equal number of seats with the list of the mayor (MR) in Wavre at the end of Sunday’s vote, finally relegated the liberals to the opposition on Tuesday. An agreement was signed between Les Engagés, the PS and Écolo for a majority pact for the next term.

This Tuesday evening, Benoît Thoreau, group leader of the Engagés, confirmed to us that the blockage that existed at the level of “higher authorities” was over. He will indeed be the new mayor of Wavre. The MR is therefore indeed returned to the opposition. “In Wavre, a page turns. The new coalition will do everything possible to make the City of Wavre a place where the quality of life is there for every resident.“, he said in a press release.

The population of Wavre yearned for change“, he added this evening. “We responded to that. The old majority had been there too long. The situation is ultimately quite logical.

Back to the day

Benoît Thoreau explained the situation at the start of the afternoon. “We had cordial contacts with the MR but we felt a real need for change in the population and the MR has been dominant in Wavre for more than 50 years”he said. “It’s difficult to implement a policy of change with training that has been there for so long.”

The 3 parties validated the pact concluded on Monday evening. But, according to Benoît Thoreau, the higher authorities of the Engagés, the PS and the MR reacted following this agreement. “It’s happening above us and we are therefore waiting”he explains. “However, they are not supposed to intervene, the autonomy of the municipalities must be a reality. But there are other issues. For the MR, it is difficult to accept that Nivelles and Wavre escape their control.”

Reaction of the MR

the president of the reform movement, Georges-Louis Bouchez, is not really happy with what is happening at the moment in Wavre. They have already lost the stronghold of Nivelles before. Beyond the loss, what really bothers the MR is the decision taken by those involved. They feel it like a stab in the back.

In any case, that’s what Tanguy Stuckens, the president of the provincial college, said. He also said that the agreement at the provincial level between the MR and Les Engagés could be compromised.
