The number of journeys made by Tallinn’s public transport has started to grow again – the number of validated journeys has increased by more than 30 percent, if you compare the first months of 2023 with the first months of 2022.

However, if you compare January and February of last year with the first two months of this year, the number of validated trips has increased from almost six million to nine million, or in other words, 33-34 percent,” explained Kõlvart.

Environmentally friendly public transport has been a clear priority for Tallinn. In this regard, the acquisition of electric buses and the establishment of charging points and the extension of the tram line to the port are definitely significant. The city wants to acquire new trams and electric buses in the coming years, the preparation of procurement will start next year.

In 2022, the service level of public transport was improved in several areas of the city. Additional departures were added to several lines on both weekdays and weekends. Also, on routes with a higher driving demand, standard buses were replaced with larger-capacity articulated buses. The service period was also extended on some lines.

The city of Tallinn is served by 80 public transport lines, including 72 bus, four tram and four trolley lines. The lines are served by 441 buses, 47 trams and 32 trolleybuses during the weekday peak hours. As of now, there are 545 buses in use in the city’s bus fleet, of which 350 are gas and 44 are hybrid buses. There are 65 trams and 44 trolleybuses in use.

In Tallinn’s 2023 city budget, 120.3 million euros are initially planned for regular transport, to which 300,000 euros are added for the pilot project of night buses planned for the summer months.
