The pope’s colon surgery was successful

Pope Francis’ planned colon surgery was successful, the Vatican says.

The 84-year-old pope underwent surgery for an inflammation of the colon, so-called diverticular disease. A statement from the Vatican said the pope was “anesthetized”, but did not say how long the operation lasted.

Earlier on Sunday, the pope, as usual, greeted the believers in St. Peter’s Square from his window in the Vatican.

Pope Francis is said to be in generally good health, but as a young man he had parts of one lung removed. He is also at times plagued by sciatica.
