The Pope is an “annoying old man”, the G7 leaders are “useless parasites”: the new councilor Carlotta Nonnis Marzano resigns in Bari after the storm over her posts

The new council of the Municipality of Bari was appointed yesterday and in less than 24 hours there has already been the first earthquake: she has resigned the new councilor for Climate and Ecological Transition, representing the Green Left Alliance, Carlotta Nonnis Marzano, for some of his social media posts over the past year, particularly one criticizing Pope Francis, and the harsh attacks that followed.

The environmentalist, the researcher, the educator and the lawyer: who are the 10 new councilors of Bari for the Leccese council. Here are the names and delegations

“In these hours a political controversy has broken out over the statements made, in the past, on a social network, by Dr. Nonnis Marzano, who I indicated as councilor in the new city council – declares the mayor of Bari, Vito Leccese – First of all, I want to clarify that I do not agree, in tone and content, with the posts to which the controversies refer but that, on the other hand, they are still free expressions of thought. I am in contact with Dr. Nonnis Marzano, who, aware of the controversy that is being raised and of the possible negative consequences to the detriment of the serenity she needs to work well, she has communicated to me in these hours that she wishes to renounce the role I have entrusted to her, also to preserve her freedom of thought and speech, and to protect her professional reputationalways recognized in every forum. Reputation and commitment in environmental battles that had convinced me to choose her to face the decisive environmental challenges that our city faces”.

The new designated councilor is Elda Perlino: will be delegated to Climate, Ecological Transition and Environment (Urban Forestry, Protection of Ecological Corridors, Public Green, Urban Hygiene, Animal Welfare, Energy Policies, Parks). Former researcher of the CNR and historical exponent of environmentalism in Bari, she chaired the association Sustainable Development, founded together with Maria Maugeri, and served as president of the city council for the environment.

In the posts that ended up under the spotlight, Marzano spoke of the pontiff as “a annoying old man”, not to be sent to the gardens “because given the tradition I would not want it to be addressed his attentions to children”.

But there are also post against G7 leaders“useless parasites”, and on the need to protect them “because otherwise fewer would return home than those who arrived” in Puglia, and against whom he hoped during the summit “a tsunami” or an indigestion of raw mussels.

Call to violence according to the opposition, resoundingly defeated in Bari in the last municipal elections with the League candidateFabio Romitowho remained stuck at 30 percent of the vote in the runoff against his challenger Vito Leccese who won with 70 percent of the vote.

And Romito himself was the harshest when speaking about a “verbally violent, extremist, inappropriate, offensive figure” and asking Leccese to revoke his appointment or otherwise he would send “the documentation to the prefect to verify the compatibility with such an important role of someone who has demonstrated that he has no sense of institutions”.

“We read, with enormous concern and deep indignation – says Forza Italia Bari – that the mayor Leccese has decided to call Carlotta Nonnis Marzano to the council, a person who, no more than a few months ago, had insulted as an ‘annoying elderly man’, given to illicit ‘attentions to children’, even Pope Francis, adding, if that were not enough, in other comments, that the participants in the G7 are ‘useless parasites’. Given this situation, we can only ask the mayor to immediately remove a negative element”.

Il Apulian MP of the League, Rossano Sasso, highlighted that the councilor Marzano “in the previous months has been the protagonist of numerous public outings in which, in order, she has incited violence, insulted Pope Francis and some political opponents, including, obviously, Matteo Salvini in first place“. And he had announced a parliamentary question on the appointment.

“Should we think that, as a reward for all this, the Democratic Party mayor rewarded her with a seat as councilor? Is this the new line of Elly Schlein’s Democratic Party in Bari?“, asks Sasso. “Is this – he continues – the caliber of the broad field, given that Nonnis Marzano is from the party of Fratoianni and Bonelli?”.

Shortly before the opposition notes, Nicola Fratoianni and Angelo Bonelli of the Green Left Alliance had wished “good work to Carlotta Nonnis Marzano“assuring her “our maximum support because her commitment is also ours”.

Ma Mimmo Lomelo, regional coordinator of Europa Verde, responded promptly: “I believe that Pope Francis is, precisely on environmental issues, the best pontiff we have ever had. I have all his writings, starting with the encyclical “Laudato si”, which for me is a beacon of modern ecological culture. If Carlotta Nonnis Marzano criticized him, even with disrespectful tones, for an unfortunate phrase of his about women, this does not affect either the gratitude that we at Europa Verde have towards the Pope or the trust towards a high-profile researcher from the University of Bari, very knowledgeable about environmental issues and marine biology.”

In short, no institutional incident, according to the historic leader of the Apulian Greens: “You have expressed those considerations at a different stage of his life, when she did not hold institutional positions. As a councilor, she will not have to deal with religious issues but with the protection of ecosystems, something she is very knowledgeable about and I am convinced that her work will be shared by many environmentalist Catholics who will forgive her, as Christians, for her statements”.

Lomelo then went on the counterattack, recalling the Fanpage investigation that highlighted the anti-Semitic and racist manifestations of the young Melonian leaders.

“If Nonnis Marzano’s Facebook comments can cause scandal, much more serious are the statements made by institutional representatives of Gioventù nazionale, the youth organization of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party, who praised Nazism and Hitler and who did not receive the censure they deserved. Those responsible for these comments have remained in their positions and now they come to lecture us for two disrespectful and deplorable but all in all ironic comments on Facebook”.

The Democratic Party is less supportive, with Senator Alberto Losacco critical: “The people of Bari really appreciate that their administrators are ambitious but they also trust that they know how to keep an eye on the sense of the ridiculous. You can be on the left of everything but common sense. We file this outburst away as the last effect of the anticyclone hoping that with the lower temperatures the sense of reality will also return. Good work to Mayor Vito Leccese and the new municipal council of Bari”.
