The pope criticizes couples without children

“Too many couples don’t have children because they don’t want them, or they only have one, the more they don’t want to,” the 85-year-old pope told a Vatican audience.

“But they have two dogs, two cats. Dogs and cats take the place of children. Yes, I understand, it makes you laugh, but that’s the reality,” he added.

The head of the Catholic Church warned that civilization was aging and lacking in humanity as fewer and fewer people chose to become parents.

“Those who live in the world and get married need to think about children,” the pope said. “Creating or adopting children is a risk, but choosing to stay without children is an even greater risk,” he added.

Last week, when the latest births in Italy were released, Francis said Italy was experiencing a demographic winter.
