In Queens (United States), the first morning sirens sound. A 78 year old lady needs help. Paramedics put on their masks and eye protection. “She has a high temperature and a cough, so we assume the Covid-19”, explains one of the caregivers. Within minutes, a team tries to resuscitate a 90-year-old woman. Neighbors watch from their windows: “We don’t know if that’s it, but we’re not leaving the house.”
The interventions have been multiplied by almost ten. “The calls come in one after the other, it does not stop”says John Dugan, paramedic. Queens is the most affected district, surely because it is the densest. “We live on top of each other”, explains a resident, exasperated. The less serious cases, tested positive, are returning to the streets. For their health, the poorest are covered by state insurance.
