The Poor Student at Oxford: A Glimpse into Elite Privilege and Class Divide at a Prestigious University

Oliver Quick is a student at the famous Oxford University. He’s actually poor and has a scholarship to the elite university, while the other students have secured their place with their family name and a bunch of donations. As soon as he gets through the door to his dorm, his fellow students make fun of his clothes. Not a good start. But there is a ray of hope. Oliver, who talks about his drug-addicted father and his drunken mother, befriends the rich heir Felix Catton, who invites him to his aristocratic family’s estate in the summer. They’ll love you,” Felix says to Oliver, referring to his family, who strut through labyrinths in the garden and lounge in silk beds. His mother Elsbeth is just as fascinated by Oliver’s “terrible” beginnings. She practically wallows in poverty pornography and keeps reminding Oliver how bad he has it. Felix’s sister Venetia sees Oliver as a new toy to have fun with, but, as she tells him, Felix doesn’t like sharing his toys. Oliver enjoys the glamor, though then he falls into seedy, dark abysses from which there may be no escape.
