Achieving 2023rd place in the information science subject in the 2022 provincial best student selection examination for grades 3 to 12, and high school course results for the A00 combination subject (mathematics – physics – chemistry) Nguyen Do Nhu Hang (Tran Hung Dao Gifted High School Computer, Binh Thuan Province) Science student) received a total score of 8 or more and was admitted to the Department of Business Accounting at Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics.
Practice martial arts, become a karate master and earn money to study
The summer when Hang was in the 5th grade of elementary school, Hang’s mother got into an accident and was unable to do anything. At that time, she went to help out at a restaurant for an acquaintance. Every day, I clear the tables and chairs and clean the tables and wash the dishes by about 14:00.
“The salary of a restaurant assistant is 20.000 VND per day. I work for three months in the summer to help my mother. I planned to continue working at a restaurant after that, but I felt like that would mean I would have to drop out of school. Still, I quit my job because I wanted to go to school more. Fortunately, the teachers at the school helped me and gave me money to pay my tuition,” said Hang.
What makes many people surprise and admire this girl is the way she chose to practice martial arts to earn her tuition. In his cramped charity home in Xuan An District, Phan Thiet City (Binh Thuan Province), Hang’s most valuable ‘assets’ are his academic achievements and medals, as well as medals from karate competitions.
“Hang likes martial arts. For many years he regularly came to the gym to practice martial arts. I practiced hard and became good at martial arts, so I became a karate player in the local area and used my monthly allowance to cover my tuition.
After returning from martial arts training, I couldn’t rest for long before going to school. He often competes in the countryside and returns home after 10 days in the north. “I thought I wouldn’t be able to take the exam anymore… but I still passed the college entrance exam,” Grandma Hang said proudly.
Hang said that in seventh grade, he was so fascinated by martial arts competitions on television that he rode his bicycle to the provincial gym to learn karate. Every evening, Hang regularly practices martial arts for about two hours. If you practice every day of the week, you will receive about 50,000 dong per month, but because you are busy with school, you can only practice a few times a week.
“Thanks to my martial arts training, I have been able to take care of myself since the 8th grade and have enough money to pay my tuition. Every month, I have some extra money, so I send a little bit to my mother.” Whenever I participate in competitions in other regions, it sometimes takes more than 15 days, but since it usually takes place in the summer, it does not interfere with my studies.
Because I was training and participating in martial arts competitions in many places, I had to study math and chemistry. However, my academic performance was still good thanks to my teachers who always encouraged me, taught me for free, and created conditions for me to participate in local competitions,” Hang said.

Karate women’s national team burdened with worries about college tuition
Mr. Duong Ngoc Son, a karate coach from Binh Thuan province, has been working with students for more than six years and knows well the gentle, polite and hard-working personality of female karate champion Nguyen Do Nhu Hang.
While watching Haeng take karate classes, Mr. Son discovered that she had a knack for fighting and recruited her into a local gifted class. Here, female athletes continued to compete and achieved many impressive achievements.
“Difficult family situations sometimes become an obstacle to Hang’s training and competition. But she is very persistent in her practice. And sweet fruit came in 2022. Hang won a bronze medal at the National Karate Club Championships.
This is a prerequisite for Hang to officially become a karateka in the province, and an additional condition for her to compete and maintain a source of income to cover her life and future studies. “Mr. Hang is an athlete who has good thinking ability and maintains high grades at a specialized high school, which is rare,” he said.

But now that the female grandmaster is worried that her contract with the Binh Thuan Province karate team will soon expire and has gone to Ho Chi Minh City for university studies, it is unclear whether she will still be able to practice the martial art. This is a way to keep getting paid.
“No one in my family received a good education, so I tried to study. In the future, I want to continue studying so that I can earn money to take care of my mother and grandmother. I’m trying to find a job that fits my studies to make a living, but I’m still worried that I won’t be able to afford college tuition for a few years. “My mom is already so miserable that she can’t afford to send me to college.” Hang pursed his lips and wiped the tears flowing down his cheeks.
I don’t know my father, I’m poor, and I’m still a good student in the countryside.
Hang, who was born without knowing his father, feels that his mother lived a difficult life raising four siblings at home. With life being difficult and her mother often working far away, Hang lives with her grandmother Dang Thi Thuong, 72, at a local charity they support.
Hang, who could not go to school for fear of his family’s difficult situation, repeatedly confessed to his mother and grandmother that his greatest wish was to go to school. Since she was in elementary school, her mother often took her to the market to sell fish and shrimp.
“Hang cries every time someone tells her that she should no longer go to school and stay home to support her grandmother and mother. I often said that I would study well to take care of my mother. “I am not as miserable as my mother sitting in the sun,” Thuong’s grandmother said.
Nguyen Thi Xuan Hoa (47 years old, Hang’s mother) helps out at the store, washes dishes, sells coffee…
She is single and struggles to make a living on her own, and she still lacks money to feed and educate her children. Her first two sons both left school early.
Meanwhile, Mr. Hang studied very well and was accepted to a vocational school, and ranked 2023rd in the information technology category in the local 2022nd grade excellent student selection test for grades 3 to 12.
She understands her daughter’s thoughts, and that only by going to school can her family escape poverty.
“I was a bit shocked to see that tuition fees are now over VND300 million per year and to hear that they will be even higher in the coming years. The amount of money I spend each semester is so much that I can’t afford it. “Not long ago, the parents of a karate club athlete knew of Hang’s difficult situation and lent him VND150,000 to complete the admission process,” said Mr. Hoa.

Female students rarely disclose their family circumstances.
Hang’s homeroom teacher at Tran Hung Dao Gifted High School (Binh Thuan), Mr. Huynh Le Tri told his student: “Hang is a passionate student and active in all school activities. Even though her family’s circumstances were very difficult, she never asked anyone for help and still struggled quietly on her own.
One time I called her and asked her why she was paying her tuition late. She asked me to wait a few more days until I received the money and received it. At this time, she discovered that she had been using the money she earned from her martial arts training to pay for tuition and academic expenses. “I practice martial arts in secret to take care of my studies without revealing much about my family’s circumstances,” he said.
