The politician breaks that made headlines

On Thursday, it became known that Prime Minister Erna Solberg had broken the infection control recommendations during the winter holidays in Geilo, where she was celebrating her 60th birthday.

Friday, police have decided to initiate an investigation of the incident for possible violation of the infection control rules.

This happens the same week as, among others, Labor deputy Bjørnar Skjæran was taken for violating the infection control rules after participating in a nachspiel in Bodø.

In other countries, infection control violations by politicians and other health authorities have had major consequences.

Too many in the restaurant

At the end of February, Jordan’s Justice Minister Bassam Talhouni and Interior Minister Samir Mobeideen had to resign after violating the government’s own infection control law.

It reported, among other things Al Jazeera.

The two are said to have been among a total of nine guests at a birthday dinner at a restaurant in the capital Amman. The birthday dinner was held two days after a law that, among other things, banned more than six guests at a restaurant, came into force.

The law was introduced after the country experienced an increase in cases of infection of the British variant.

The two ministers are also said to have been pictured at the restaurant where the distance between the guests was far less than what the rules dictated.

The incident created strong reactions in the country, not least as a result of previous reports that managers were not punished for infection control violations in the same way as other citizens.

Had to withdraw

In May, it became known that the British epidemiologist Neil Ferguson had to resign from his position at the government research group (SAGE) after violating Britain’s strict corona rules.

Ferguson led the research team at Imperial Collage who published the analysis as caused the UK to completely reverse its covid-19 strategy.

The renowned researcher is said to have allowed a married woman to visit him on at least two occasions, thus violating the rules for social distancing. The woman is described by Telegraph as Ferguson’s lover.

Shortly after the visit was revealed, Ferguson resigned, a decision fully supported by Health Minister Matt Hancock.

He stated to Sky News that he became completely speechless when he learned that the government’s key adviser had broken the rules.

Difference in life to learn

Also in the USA, there have been a number of cases where politicians have not followed their own infection control advice.

The mayor of Denver, Colorado, traveled to his family in the state of Mississippi this fall to celebrate Thanksgiving. At the same time, the rest of the city’s population had been asked to stay at home during the holidays.

According to online newspapers Globalnews A Pennsylvania mayor also went to an indoor restaurant in the neighboring state of Maryland after a similar ban was imposed shortly beforehand in his own state.

In December, California Governor Gavin Newsom and San Francisco Mayor London visited the same restaurant two days apart. This happened shortly after the introduction of very strict restrictions on restaurants and shops in order to stop the spread of infection.

The former must also have been pictured without a face mask at the event.

However, none of the mentioned cases from the USA should have had direct consequences for the politicians, but they have had to apologize for the incidents.

– It does not matter if something is technically legal or not. I have to set a higher standard and will do better from now on, Breed said in his apology, according to the LA Times.
