So to say, the official reason why we are in such a situation in Riga is the investigation into possible economic failures in the City Council’s Transport Department, but political observers point out that the difficulties for this coalition to work together have been noticeable for a long time. The latest events in the capital are just a pretext for these sparks of political friction to grow into a flame.
After Stakis announced his resignation, the other coalition partners demonstrated a united bloc yesterday, stating at a joint press conference that they expect the “Par!/Progressive” faction to retract the negotiated ugliness and, quote, false statements.
If this happens, everyone can still work together. The Vice Mayor of Riga, Vilnis Ķirsis, said that the “Progressives” should also come up with their own vision for the next mayor: “It only depends on the “Progressives” at the moment.” I invite them to really be adults, come to talk, find a common solution for us and move on.”
The “Jaunas Vienotības” politician said that he knew nothing about the possible negotiations in the council’s corridors for the creation of a new coalition – replacing the “Progressives” with oppositionists.

The “Progressives” themselves are sure that such an alternative agreement is actually already ready, and gathered today in the evening to discuss what to answer, at least technically, to their coalition partners.
Shortly before the meeting, news appeared that it was proposed to appoint ķirsi as acting mayor at the next council meeting. This caused a new ripple.
After the meeting, the leader of the faction stated that he saw no reason to withdraw any statements, but he would still invite his colleagues to a conversation to try to preserve the situation.
“New Unity” was not in a hurry to express support for this idea, but indicated that they are ready for a conversation. The emergency meeting of the Riga City Council, where the acting mayor will be decided, is already on Wednesday.
