The political Cadornism of the Italian right

In his first editorial as director of Repubblica, Mario Orfeo launched the debate on “political Cadornism”.

Orpheus writes: The truly distinctive signal of this right, so different from the classical and liberal one, is the permanent lever of resentment. Meloni’s right, therefore patriotic and never anti-fascist, remains (voluntarily) stuck in a past – that of exclusion – that does not pass, supported by resentment in the expectation of a revenge even now that it has won. A political philosopher quoted Gramsci to me and his definition of political Cadornism: for the Italian right “something is right only because it is decided by those in command and if it is not implemented, the fault lies with those who oppose it”.

The reference is to General Luigi Cadorna (photo below), who after the defeat at Caporetto caused by him, denied his responsibilities

Giordano Bruno Guerri: “This right-wing resentment never leads to anything good”

Giordano Bruno Guerri, historian, but how does the right speak?

“Who are you referring to?”

Giorgia Meloni infamously called the mole in the Fratelli d’Italia chat.

«I wrote a book about Patrizio Peci, the repentant Red Brigades member, who was called Io l’infame».

Doesn’t that mean that…?

«But no, we’re not joking. Let’s say that Giorgia Meloni speaks a Garbatella language.”
