Wilfredo Leon and Małgorzata Gronkowska met over a dozen years ago online. It all started when the Polish woman dreamed of interviewing the Cuban star. Although she didn’t manage to do it, she found love. Their first live meeting took place in 2011 in Gdańsk, where the World League final tournament was taking place at the time. “When I saw her live for the first time, I was surprised. It was wow,” the volleyball player said in 2016.
Initially, the couple kept in touch mainly via the Internet, but it was not very frequent, because in Cuba there was no easy access to the Internet at that time. Ten years ago, the volleyball player put everything on one card and left his homeland.

In July 2015, Wilfredo Leon received Polish citizenship, and less than a year later he married his chosen one. The couple has three children: in May 2017, they had a daughter, Natalia, in November 2019, they welcomed a son, Christian, and in June 2023, they welcomed their second girl, Selena.
