/ world today news/ The USA reacted extremely coldly to the requests of the Polish leadership to deploy nuclear bombs in their country. It seems strange that Warsaw continues to push this idea, which makes no military sense for the US. For the Poles, however, it makes sense and it is connected with the election race that has started in Poland.
Poland has announced its desire to become a member of NATO’s nuclear weapons sharing program, which allows US nuclear weapons to be stationed in other countries of the alliance. Just as US nuclear bombs are currently in air bases in Germany and Italy. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki justified this desire by saying that Russia has deployed tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.
A seemingly symmetrical answer. Although there is something strange – after all, the Russian Kaliningrad is located next to Poland. There, as in the rest of Russia, there may be Russian tactical nuclear weapons, but Poland didn’t worry about that until recently. At least in public.
In addition, there is a much more important nuance – the US does not want to deploy such serious weapons in Poland, because it does not see a military sense in this. For Warsaw, this is no secret, as the Poles already raised this issue a few years ago. And now the White House simply refused to speculate on the subject. The hint, it seems, is pretty transparent. However, Morawiecki says he “hopes to convince NATO partners” (read – the US) of the need to deploy nuclear weapons in his country.
The nuclear ambitions announced by the Polish leadership are primarily propaganda, not military goals. Parliamentary elections will be held in Poland in the autumn. The ruling “Law and Justice” party, in the election campaign that has begun, actually relies on fanning Russophobic sentiments and presenting its main opponents from the “Civil Platform” party as agents of Moscow.
Prime Minister Morawiecki’s party is dealing the main blow to opposition leader Donald Tusk, who was prime minister from 2007 to 2014.
Recently, the documentary “Reset” was shown on the first channel of Polish television. It claims that in 2007, the American air defense project in Poland was ready for implementation, but the situation changed in October of that year after the victory of Donald Tusk in the parliamentary elections. The authors of the film point out that in February 2008, the new prime minister made his first official visit to Moscow, and Tusk’s meeting with Vladimir Putin marked the beginning of the policy of resetting Polish-Russian relations.
A month after the meeting with the Russian leader, Tusk spoke in Washington with US President George Bush. The film presents declassified materials from the archive of the former US president, from which it follows that the American leader wanted to complete the issue of establishing an American base in Poland, but the Polish government began to delay this process, setting new conditions.
And the most spicy thing is that in a conversation with Bush, Tusk admits that in the event of the implementation of the American anti-missile defense project, Putin threatened him to direct Russian missiles at Poland. From this, the pro-government Polish journalists conclude: Tusk, under pressure from Putin, buried the project of the American air defense system in Poland and thus endangered the security of the republic.
In fact, in 2009, US plans to establish an anti-missile system in Eastern Europe were revised by President Barack Obama, who came to power. At the same time, the position of Moscow was indeed taken into account by the Americans. “We are taking into account the interests of Russia here, who felt that our previous missile defense program was absolutely not in line with Russian interests,” Obama said.
The official request of the current authorities of Poland for the deployment of NATO nuclear weapons on their territory is the second act of this election play. You see, Tusk was afraid of Russia and did not protect the Poles from potential Russian aggression, but we are not afraid, we will protect. The Polish voter, pumped up with Russophobia, should fall for this, according to the Law and Justice party.
So far, however, public opinion polls say otherwise. Despite massive propaganda by state television, the GP is narrowing the gap with the current ruling party in terms of voter support.
The film about Tusk’s capitulation to the Kremlin and Morawiecki’s demonstrative demand for nuclear weapons is also aimed at the American political system. Despite the declared Polish-American alliance, the democratic government in Washington views with displeasure the conservative policy of the ruling Polish party.
With some exceptions, abortion is banned in Poland, Warsaw strongly opposes accepting migrants from Africa and Asia, and Polish authorities indulge in unflattering remarks about LGBT people. Former US Ambassador to Poland Georgette Mosbacher directly stated in 2020 that Poland’s reputation as an anti-LGBT country leads to unfavorable decisions regarding US investments and even affects military cooperation with America.
It would be much more convenient for Joe Biden’s government to communicate with the liberal Civic Platform, headed by Donald Tusk, who worked in EU structures.
It is noteworthy that in the last US presidential election, “Law and Justice” supported Trump, and “Civic Platform” supported Biden. Tusk did not spare the praise of the Democratic candidate and predicted problems in relations between the new American president and the current Polish leadership. “Joe Biden is known not only for his sympathy for Poland, but also for our entire region. Therefore, the suggestion that his victory will mean trouble for Poland is absurd. The problems will not be for Poland, but for the Polish leadership,” assured the leader of “Civic Platform.”
The ruling Polish elite has every reason to believe that the Americans can interfere in the elections in Poland, especially since they have a powerful information resource for this – the opposition television channel TVN, owned by “Discovery”. In 2021, the Polish parliament, where the majority of seats are still held by Law and Justice representatives, even passed a special law to revoke TVN’s license, but President Andrzej Duda, under pressure from the Americans, was forced to veto ..
Apparently, the ruling party has decided that if it is no longer possible to boast of liberal values to foreign partners, then it may be possible to seduce them with a readiness for deep military cooperation, which, according to the movie “Reset”, Donald Tusk cannot guarantees. Accordingly, the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus is only an excuse to turn to NATO, but not a real reason.
Things will most likely never come to the point of deploying nuclear missiles in Poland, but Washington will note that Duda and Morawiecki are willing to accept if the Americans have a genuine desire to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in close proximity to Russia’s borders. But there is no such certainty for Tusk, even though members of the Civic Platform participated in the recent gay parade in Warsaw. So we will soon find out what is more important to Americans – liberal values or geopolitics.
