The Polish chain Biedronka will bypass the Sunday sales ban. He starts lending books

The announced move is to allow the retail chain, owned by Portuguese chain Jeronimo Martins, to open some of its 3,000 stores as early as Sunday, August 7, according to the website. The timing of the plan coincides with the statements of some employees, but the discount chain has not confirmed it.

According to the mentioned document, customers will be able to borrow books with the help of a loyalty card for two weeks. The offer includes around 140 titles. If the client does not return the book after two weeks, Biedronka will block the card for further borrowings, but not for purchases. For one title, the customer must pay a refundable deposit of three zlotys (over CZK 15).

Since the enactment of the ban on Sunday sales in 2018, Polish retailers have been looking for ways to avoid the regulation. Parliament last year tightened the rules that previously allowed supermarkets to offer postal services and thus be open on Sundays.

Biedronka is another retail chain that intends to use the exemptions set for “stores in establishments operating in the fields of culture, sports, education, tourism and leisure”, wrote the website Wiadomoscihandlowe.pl.
