Austin Lee Edwards was shot and killed fleeing. He is suspected of triple murder and the kidnapping of a teenage girl whom he tricked by pretending to be someone else.
It was Friday that police in Riverside, California responded to reports of a major home fire. At the same time, there were reports from the public of a girl appearing to be in trouble as she got into a red car a few houses away.
When firefighters arrived at the home, they found three people dead just inside the entryway, and it was quickly determined that the three had been killed.
The victims were Mark Winek (69) and his wife Sharie Winek (65) and their daughter Brooke Winek (38).
Police soon discovered that the girl the public had been making 911 calls for was a teenager who lived in the house where the three were found dead, writes River Police on their websites.
They also discovered that the man who was with her driving the red car was 28-year-old Austin Lee Edwards, who was from North Chesterfield, Virginia, across the country.
A few hours later, this car was spotted in San Bernardino County, in the city of Kelso. Edwards fired on the police SWAT team and was himself killed when they responded.
The 15-year-old girl was rescued and escaped unharmed from the dramatic police chase and its bloody conclusion.
Police believe Edwards killed the three in the house before abducting the 15-year-old. Edwards had been working as a police officer in Henrico County Virginia in January of this year. On October 28 he left his job, but the reason is not known. Shortly thereafter, he continued as a police officer in Washington County Virginia, he writes CBS. There should be no comments about the 28-year-old.
Riverside Police believe Edwards met the 15-year-old girl through so-called “catfishing,” pretending to be someone else.
– He developed a relationship with her where they texted each other and probably called each other. He was able to obtain personal information and his address, says Police Officer Ryan Railsback of the Riverside Police.
Edwards is said to have driven from Virgina to Riverside, where he carried out the gruesome murders.
– This is another reminder that there are “predators” online who are after our children, says Police Chief Larry Gonzalez.
