The police shot the perpetrator at Bislett. Could they have used other methods?

Why did the police drive the perpetrator by car? Why did they shoot him? This is what the instructions say about the police’s use of force.

One of the police’s BMW X5 was used to try to drive down the perpetrator. When he got into the car, he was shot.

Tuesday morning, a 33-year-old was shot by the police at Bislett in Oslo. He died of his injuries.

After he threatened people on the street with a knife, the police hit the perpetrator twice. He got up and attacked a police officer inside the car.

Videos show that the perpetrator tears open the door and repeatedly stabs the police officer with a large knife.

He was then shot. Police believe they averted a dangerous attack.

Nevertheless, there were reactions on social media after a short time. Several thought the police should have acted differently: They should not have shot a mentally ill man and rather chosen a more gentle approach.

What do the instructions say about the police’s pattern of action in such cases?
