The Card Counter: A story in the world of high stakes poker players
Former military interrogator William Tell, played by Oscar Isaac, is serving a ten-year prison sentence. He learned to count cards in prison and developed into a talented poker player.
After his prison sentence he meets the young Cirk (Tye Sheridan), who wants to take revenge on a common enemy, a military officer (William Dafoe). Tell decides to help the young man.
For this they need the support of the donor La Linda (Tiffany Haddish). Together, the unlikely trio want to win a World Series of Poker tournament in Las Vegas.
PokerStars commentator Joe Stapelton acted as a consultant for the production so that the actions at the gaming tables could be conveyed authentically. In a post on Twitter, Stapelton announced:
OK dear ones. Last year I worked on a film as a poker advisor. This … is the trailer. It would really mean a lot to me if you checked it out, and if it seems interesting to you, maybe you could … might I say maybe … retweet?
