the poignant story of his past in “Sun Goes Down”

Lil Nas X goes back in time and becomes his own guardian angel on his new single “Sun Goes Down”, heralding a new album this summer.

After the hit “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”, Lil Nas X returns with a moving and very personal ballad. In the music video for “Sun Goes Down”, he goes back in time and goes back in time to visit a younger version of himself in the midst of inner questioning.

In his white costume, like a guardian angel, Lil Nas X will do his best to encourage and accompany him. “In the video for “Sun Goes Down” I go back in time to visit a younger version of myself who struggles inside, who hates himself and doesn’t want to live anymore.. I try to do my best to support him (…) This song is really special for meHe said in a tweet.

“These gay thoughts have always haunted me, I prayed to God to keep them away”

The words, very personal, tear away tears. They contrast the dancing tempo of the title. The rapper evokes an adolescence marked by depression, harassment and suicidal thoughts: “Since I was ten, I have felt lonely. I had friends, but they harassed me. I was always thinking to myself: why are my lips so big? Was I too dark? Did they sense my fears? These gay thoughts have always haunted me, I prayed to God to take them away. It’s hard to fight, and nobody knows it when you stay silent. ”

As teenage Lil Nas X goes to prom alone, the Lil Nas X of the future reassures him, singing: “I know you want to cry, but there is more to life than death. “ He guides his old version of himself beyond suicidal thoughts, loneliness and loathing for his sexuality.

“My visual aesthetic is constantly evolving”

Obviously, this “story-telling” clip in pastel colors is the opposite of the very daring “Montero” in which Lil Nas X twerks on Satan. For Rolling Stone, he explained his visual approach and concept for this video. “My visual aesthetic is constantly evolving. But a recurring theme in my work will always be surrealism or futurism. I really like to mix reality and imagination, I guess that’s my “thing”, did he declare. But for “Sun Goes Down,” I kept that kind of feeling to a minimum, because I wanted it to be very real. But I’m still in a meditative state, going to this purple world where my future and my past come together in one place. I fly through this world and go to my past self, and try to lift it up.»

This single is responsible for announcing the rapper’s first album which will be released this summer. An album reflecting the rapper’s state of mind, more confident than ever. “I had doubts about every single I released in my career but not about this album ”, he said in a tweet.

Lil Nas X fully assumes his artistic choices and his sexuality. A long journey and not without pitfalls. In September 2019, he was already giving himself up for CBS on his homosexuality and his journey towards self-acceptance. “I prayed that it was only a phase. For this young man it was not a good thing, he explains. We still have a long way to go ” he adds, moved.
