Farewell from Valdis Rūja will take place on Friday, October 2, at 2 pm in the Great Hall of the Crematorium.

The poet Arnolds Auziņš dedicated the words of remembrance to his colleague on behalf of LRS:

“Valdis Rūja, the noblest and one of the oldest members of the Writers’ Union, has passed away from us forever, and has spent a life rich in adventures and experiences.

A talented country boy from North Vidzeme has come to Riga and entered the 2nd studio of Daile Theater, playing the main roles under the direction of the great director Smiļģis, but poetry as a jealous lover does not allow side steps, and he wants to get creative radio, then he is offered to lead the responsible authorities, and the poet becomes the director of the drama (now the National) Theater, later the director of the opera, then the cultural palace “Northern Lights”. But Valdis really proves himself by assuming the duties of an editor in the publishing house “Liesma”. His advice and empathy in editing the manuscripts has helped both young authors and experienced pen brothers, “the LRS memorial said.

For many years we have worked together in the Association of Senior Education and Culture Workers “Saulstariņš”, and the Board has always been accompanied by a playmate, a spouse and a muse Nina, who inspired me to write love poems. Many times we have entertained the audience in schools, libraries and cultural centers. I admire his ability to subdue an audience – young and old, with both patriotic verses about heroic riflemen and humorous verses about gypsies.

Valdis Rūja celebrated his 90th anniversary at the Riga Latvian Society, where he worked at the Cozy Club. Joyfully thrilled, as if a marshal’s wand had been given, the reveler received the message that he had been awarded the title of honorary soldier because he had befriended the army and dedicated many poems to them.

Valdis loved his native side very much. Even Valdis Kriķis took the pseudonym from the childhood river. He was proud of the title of Honorary Citizen of Rūjiena, and in his essays he praised this beautiful city and sincere, active people.

May it be easy for your soul, Valdis! “
