You have probably already wondered what the hole under the faucet is for. Most sinks, tubs, and sinks have a drain hole and another hole at the top. The explanation is simple.
The drain hole is used for draining water and the other hole is for water overflow. The water overflow hole serves two functions:
Safety
When filling, you may walk away and forget that you are filling. If you had a sink without an overflow, it could very quickly happen that your water would overflow. The overflow hole is never closed with a plug and ensures that the water drains into the waste without overflowing. If the water is released from the faucet at full capacity, it may happen that even with an overflow, not all the excess water will have time to drain away. However, the probability of overflow will be much lower compared to a sink without an overflow.
Acceleration of water drainage
Drainage and overflow are led into one waste pipe. As water drains, it pushes air in front of it. This air creates a kind of barrier and slows down the water flow. The overflow opening thus allows air to be removed from the waste pipe. Thanks to the flow of air into the drain pipe through the waste channel, drainage is accelerated.
Maintenance
The drain and overflow hole must be cleaned regularly so that germs do not form in them. Sediment and food residue can accumulate in both openings and cause unpleasant odors.
The drain hole is usually cleaned, but the overflow hole is forgotten. In order to perform its functions, it must be clean and the air should flow without resistance. You can use half a cup of baking soda with lemon juice for cleaning. Using a container with a pour spout, pour the mixture into the overflow hole, then add half a cup of vinegar. Lemon has excellent antibacterial and disinfectant effects. Of course, you can also use liquid cleaners from the store.
Sinks with an overflow are commonly sold, but some designer products do not have an overflow. When choosing which sink to place in your dream home, choose carefully. Consider which product to choose.
