The Plight of Vladimir Kara-Murza: Jailed Activist in Siberia

The Russian-British journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza was convicted in April of fraud, of spreading “false” information about Russia’s military involvement and of joining an “undesirable organisation”.

Kara-Murza is among those who have called on the outside world to introduce sanctions against the Russian authorities.

He is now serving a sentence of 25 years in prison – which is the harshest sentence handed down to a critic of the Russian regime ever. Kara-Murza denies the accusations. In August, he lost the appeal case.

Transferred to horror prison

In September, he was transferred to the notorious IK-6 penal colony located in the Siberian city of Omsko, according to his lawyer, Vadim Prokhorov.

Putin critic Alexei Navalny is also serving time in the prison camp, where prisoners are said to have been mistreated, according to Russian media.

Navalny’s supporters have previously described it as “one of Russia’s most terrifying prisons”.

According to Prokhorov, the transfer from the prison in Moscow took just under three weeks. Such transfers between prisons in Russia often take a long time and are usually done by train. During the transfers, it happens that the inmates are not allowed to have contact with other inmates or information about their whereabouts.

Sound the alarm

In an interview with The Independent his wife Evgenja Kara-Murza raises the alarm about his health. While he has been in prison, his condition is said to have gotten significantly worse – and his stay in Siberia prison can therefore be life-threatening, she believes.

Kara-Murza had serious health problems even before he was arrested on 11 April last year. He suffers from a nerve disease called polyneuropathy, which, according to his wife, is due to him being poisoned in 2015 and 2017.

According to the neurologist at the prison in Moscow, his state of health will only deteriorate if he cannot exercise regularly and get access to fresh air.

– His condition is only going to get worse because he can’t get fresh air or walks, says his wife.

After being moved to the prison in Siberia, he is kept in a small room. As a result of his condition, he can no longer feel his own bones, he claims.

Now the wife is asking the British authorities to put more pressure on Russia to release him – and insists that “time is running out”.
