The votes of Más Madrid, PSOE, Vox and Grupo Mixto in the plenary session of Cibeles have led the Madrid City Council to urge the Community to “immediately halt the expansion work on Metro line 11 and to modify the construction repositioning the station in the initially planned location, in the Paseo de Yeserías, next to the Prague Bridge”.

The text of the proposal, launched by Más Madrid with an amendment from the PSOE, sought to get the municipal parties to position themselves regarding the controversial felling of trees planned during the expansion of the subway in the area, which changed after the public information period.
Both PP and Ciudadanos have voted against the proposal, amended by a contribution from the PSOE to safeguard the Comillas park, where the tunnel boring machine is scheduled to enter. This second option was also approved despite the contrary position of the government team.
Due to this result, the Madrid City Council urges the Community to modify the construction project for line 11, relocating the Comillas Metro station to its initial location, Baleares Street. And also to modify it so that the tunnel boring machine starts its work at 34 Antonio Leyva street “and not in the Comillas park”.
More Madrid demanded that the Government “do not deceive the neighbors because the Community only paralyzes the works, it takes time but does not provide a solution” to the citizens, who demand the maintenance of the trees, “more than 50 years old”, to remember that “in the time of (Alberto Ruiz) Gallardón, when the M-30 was buried, they were not even charged.”
The party’s spokesperson for the Environment, José Luis Nieto, has charged against the “arboricide in Madrid Río” and has called for “common sense” because “the City Council has to protect and conserve green areas.” After branding Almeida a “tree-killing mayor”, Nieto has demanded that the public be heard.
The delegate for the Environment, Borja Carabante, has answered that the Community has taken “responsible action when reconsidering the project” because the extension of line 11 “is necessary but with the least damage to the trees” and made reference to “the 1,193 trees that the National Government has cut down in Madrid” or the “32,353 of the previous Government” of Carmena.
During the plenary debate this Tuesday in Cibeles, various opposition parties made reference to the 78,616 mature trees that the city has lost during Almeida’s legislature, data published by this newspaper ten days ago. “Thousands of healthy trees have been felled indiscriminately,” Nieto recalled in response to the Environment delegate.
