Coach Jindřich Trpišovský praised that Slavia’s footballers were able to improve the longest series in the number of league matches without defeat in independent history. He appreciated breaking the record all the more because his charges had to play in the match of the 25th round in Brno from the 18th minute by ten after the exclusion of the goalkeeper Matyáš Vágner. They led the duel to a goalless draw and scored points in 37 consecutive matches in a row.
The Slavists improved their own record from 2016 to 2017, when they did not lose 36 consecutive league matches under the leadership of the previous coach Jaroslav Šilhavý. The series was paradoxically ended in Eden by Trpišovský, who was leading Liberec at the time.
The third longest series is held by rival Sparta, which between 2009 and 2010 scored in 33 matches of the highest competition. Apart from the Prague “S”, only Plzeň entered the elite ten with a string of 22 duels at the turn of the years 2017 to 2018.
Slavists have been holding the current series for more than a year since the beginning of last March. The last time they did not score in the league was when they defeated 0: 2 on the soil of Slovácko. “Of course we are happy with the record. Nobody has historically succeeded, it is a unique series in the Czech league. The 37 matches are a long time. We talked about it in the cabin as well, when you are one step away from overcoming something like that, you want to manage it.” said at an online press conference Trpišovský.
In ten, his charges finished not only today’s goalless match in Brno, but also the last round at home against Opava, which they defeated 4: 0. “A lot of things played against us today – exclusion, reaching into the line-up, absence, fatigue, overloading some players. That’s why I’m glad we made it this way, even though we’re sorry we didn’t win,” added Trpišovský.
Since last year’s defeat in Slovakia, Slavia has lost points in the league in only nine matches in draws, winning 28 matches. “It’s great. It can be seen that it’s doing well here, that we’re on the right track. But it’s a pity that we didn’t win today,” said Slavia defender and midfielder Lukáš Masopust, who led the Prague team as captain today.
