The Ultra Broadband Plan, finally, accelerates. “The goal is that construction sites in all Trentino municipalities will be closed in 2022” confirms Paolo Simonetti, provincial manager of the Strategic Mission Unit for innovation in the energy and telecommunications sectors.
«On a national level, not just provincial, people travel with a 2-year delay: the concession in fact provided for the completion of the network by 2020 in the planned municipalities. Now an attempt has been made to recover in terms of administrative simplification and rules that facilitate authorizations have been introduced ”.
In the provincial territory, construction sites are increasing to bring the ultra-fast network to citizens and businesses, especially in peripheral areas that will be able to benefit from the latest generation digital services and new development opportunities. The company that is carrying out the works in the area is Open Fiber, which has been awarded the public tenders of Infratel for the coverage of the white areas, “market failure”, of the country. In the province of Trento, the value of the project, financed with public funds, amounts to 72 million euros and will connect two hundred municipalities with the ultra-fast fiber network. To date, 83 municipalities have already been approved with executive planning, with the goal shared by the Province and the concessionaire of reaching 115 municipalities at the end of the year, or more than 50% of the municipalities included in the ultra-broadband plan.
At the moment, 60 construction sites are open throughout the territory. Open Fiber is building an entirely optical fiber network in the Trentino valleys, in FTTH mode (Fiber to the home, fiber up to the home), which enables connection speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second. A smaller percentage of the cabling takes place using Fwa (Fixed wireless access) technology, i.e. through repeaters connected to the fiber optic network which in turn radiate a high potential signal, which allows to reach a good connection speed even in the most inaccessible areas . This second solution will make it possible to connect even the most distant residential units, guaranteeing in any case a stable connection.
As of August 31, 2020, Open Fiber completed the ultra-broadband network in 20 municipalities and the service is active in 14 of these. Another 16 municipalities are expected by 2020.
The FTTH network is the best performing technology on the market and allows companies and citizens to have a fast and stable connection and, in case of emergencies such as the one experienced in recent months, to be able to work fully with the smart working mode and to use without problems with distance learning platforms.
Citizens of already completed municipalities with a salable network can consult the Open Fiber website, enter their number and choose which operator to request activation of the contract with.
On the Telecom front, on the other hand, in the last 6 months several exchanges have been opened in Trentino and now many citizens, instead of ADSL, can request VDSL, thus passing from 15 mega to at least 70.
