The entire process of combating doping is detailed, and full of bureaucracy and procedures that aim to protect the athlete and, at the same time, ensure that there is no fraud. This procedure is in a manual, the International Standard for Testing and Investigation (PITI), which must always be followed.
Anyone who consumes a prohibited substance or undergoes prohibited treatment with the aim of gaining performance, as a rule, is also advised on what to do to avoid being caught. On the contrary, anti-doping bodies have an intelligence department to be able to identify as many doping cases as possible by carrying out as few tests as possible. As many substances appear most frequently in the morning, surprise tests are almost always done in the early hours of the day.
Early in the morning, it is much more likely that the test will identify, for example, whether an athlete has used growth hormone, known by the acronym GH, a common doping among weightlifters, bodybuilders and MMA fighters. As the half-life of GH is short and tests cannot take place at night, those who use this form of doping normally do so before going to sleep. Olympic weightlifter Fernando Saraiva’s two positive tests for GH in 2021 were collected around 6am.
The later in the day the test is carried out, the further away it is from the most common window of consumption (at night), and the less likely it is that the test will be positive. This is why Gabigol’s stance is viewed with suspicion, as he refused to take the test when inspectors arrived at Flamengo’s CT, before training on the morning of April 8, and postponed it as long as possible. He trained, had lunch and considered going to sleep before agreeing to take the exam.
This violates a basic principle of the surprise test: the athlete is unaware that he or she will undergo an exam. If the officers arrived at the CT before 9am, and Gabigol only agreed to be tested after lunch, he was not caught by surprise, and may have had time to prepare for the exam. The other players chosen by the Brazilian Doping Control Authority (ABCD) in the same test performed without problems.
It can’t be when he wants
The surprise test was also valid for the so-called biological passport, a history of exams that demonstrates variations in certain parameters, without necessarily showing a positive test for a prohibited substance. Therefore, the test needed to be carried out at least two hours after physical activity, so that the concentrations of certain substances, especially exogenous ones, could be correctly identified. But Gabigol decided on his own when he would take the test, after training.
