Organized by the Pilar Regional Node, last Wednesday, 26 October, a Workshop was held with Community Presidents and Mayors of the Castilian and Las Colonias Departments.
On this occasion it was the headquarters of the Guillermo Lehmann Cooperative, on its property in San Agustín. The meeting was propitious to present the production project of the San Agustín Forest (Guillermo Lehmann Cooperative), which was supervised by Eng. Agr. Juan Pablo Luna, for the Cooperative; and Dr. Jonicélia Araujo, of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (UNL).
After the tour of the forest plantation, Jonicélia Araujo explained that “the Cooperative had that unproductive lot, saline-sodium, with drainage problems and also with some floodable plains, with a high degree of compaction and low fertility. With the aim of creating a demonstration forestry unit for socio-environmental purposes and also to test forestry production as a business unit, the Cooperative, in agreement with the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, has designed and built a forestry production unit. There, the growth and behavior of five eucalyptus genetic materials – 4 clonal and one from seed – are evaluated annually, as is the response of these materials with and without subsurface management and fertilization. “
In this sense, the researcher highlighted that “forest production with fast growing species, in addition to meeting the market demand for forest products in the region, generates new jobs and a new source of income for the producer with good profitability. . Likewise, it is extremely important for greenhouse gas mitigation due to the excellent carbon capture rate of these species, “he stressed.
For this reason the forestry project can be reported as of great interest. In particular for the producer because “he deals a lot with problems, whether it is water stagnation, low fertility or a peri-urban area, among other aspects; provides animal welfare (shade); install forest tents as anti-drift barriers for plant protection products and exploit the economic and fiscal advantages of the state, this is the law 25080 and others ”.
Furthermore, it “improves profitability through a silvopastoral approach; take advantage of market opportunities for wood and non-wood products, such as poles, firewood, wood, cellulose, etc. detailed the specialist.
This activity has environmental benefits of great interest. “It captures and fixes the carbon; mitigates climate change; produces low CO2 emissions; and it has a positive impact on the territory, on the environment and on society ”explained the interviewee.
In this sense, it is important to encourage government actions of environmental awareness and social responsibility, both in urban, rural and peri-urban areas.
Finally, the president of the community of San Agustín, Emiliano Mónaca, reported: “How the afforestation of La Lehman has affected its community and its countless socio-environmental benefits, and also how urban and rural trees are managed in the community of San Agustín and what their environmental awareness projects are ”.
