This Monday the Chachapoyas Textile Art exhibition was inaugurated at the Córdoba Legislature headquarters, which can be visited until November 10. This is a photographic exhibition of looms, fabrics and communities of Chachapoyas organized by the Consulate General of Peru in Córdoba and the Unicameral.
The photos have been selected from a registry work done by the Mundo Chachapoyas Project of the Regional Government of Amazonas and belong to the photographer Gerson Rojas Herrera. The curator, design and assembly of the exhibition are in charge of Santiago Díaz Gavier.
The weaving technique of the region is a cultural heritage that has been transmitted from generation to generation. Chachapoyas is the capital of the department of Amazonas, in northeastern Peru, in the basin of the Marañón River, one of the main tributaries of the Amazon River. In an imposing natural setting of cloud forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes, an important culture developed since 800 AD, known for its buildings, funerary monuments and the quality of its fabrics.
The tradition of this textile art is preserved thanks to the communities, who continue to use the materials, techniques and iconography of their ancestors. For example, the backstrap loom is a weaving technique that the region has maintained since pre-Hispanic times.
The materials used are cotton, wool and cabuya, a typical yunga plant. The dyeing process is carried out using plant components such as walnut and beet, or animal components such as cochineal. With them, Chachapoyas weavers make blankets, bags, ponchos, footwear and saddlebags.
These pieces constitute a notable cultural heritage, which reflects the worldview of its people through a rich iconography characterized by its abstract geometric designs of animals and plants, and by its original use of color.
Fiorella Polanco Martínez, Consul General of Peru in Córdobawas present at the opening of the activity and highlighted that these photography exhibitions, talks and workshops seek to value traditions, and offer participants the opportunity to learn, create and publicize the local culture of the Chachapoyas.
Also at the inauguration were: the legislative deputy secretary, Maciel Balduzzi; and Federico Menis, general director of Cultural and Heritage Affairs of the Legislature, among other authorities.
