The Philippines adds damage after Typhoon Rai, with more than a hundred dead

Bohol Island Governor Arthur Yap said 72 people had died in the province of the same name, according to local mayors. He also said that due to connection problems, he had only spoken to 33 of the 48 mayors so far. Authorities in other parts of the country are still assessing the extent of the damage, with other people believed to have died in landslides and floods. Rescuers are talking about total destruction.

Thousands of soldiers, police, coastguards and firefighters have been deployed in the worst-hit areas to assist in search and rescue operations.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies established the collection for long-term aid to the Philippines. It set the target amount at 20 million Swiss francs (CZK 486 million).

A wind speed of 195 kilometers per hour

When the typhoon arrived on the mainland on Thursday, its winds reached a speed of 195 kilometers per hour, in gusts of up to 270 kilometers per hour. He weakened slightly on Friday, still reaching a speed of 155 kilometers per hour. On Saturday, he moved over the South China Sea.

Army aerial photographs showed extensive damage in the areas affected by the storm. About 300,000 people were forced to flee their homes.

An average of twenty tropical storms strike the Philippines each year, causing floods and landslides. The most destructive so far in 2013 was Typhoon Haiyan. As a result of his rampage, more than 6,300 people died and more than four million had to leave their homes.

According to the AFP agency, Rai is special in that he arrived very late during the typhoon season – most tropical cyclones in the Pacific Ocean are created from July to October.
