The Manila Times reported on April 7, 2023, that the Philippine Navy has sent its advanced warship, the BRP Antonio Luna, to patrol the Philippine Rise off the coast of Aurora province. The move comes amid concerns over the undersea riches of the area, which have attracted China’s attention. The Philippine Rise is not a disputed territory, but it is believed to be abundant with natural resources such as minerals and gas. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has expressed optimism about the country’s economic recovery, as inflation eased to 7.6 percent in March from 8.6 percent in February. However, the rate is still above the central bank’s inflation target of 2 to 4 percent. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has warned public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers against exploiting passengers during Holy Week. The faithful are also called upon to pray and atone for their sins on Good Friday, which is marked by some 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide. Lastly, analysts expect interest rate hikes to continue despite a slowdown in consumer price growth in March.
