The government of the Philippines is planning to partner with the private sector to improve and manage the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the main gateway in Metro Manila. National Economic and Development Authority Secretary Arsenio Balisacan announced during the Philippine Economic briefing in the US that the government plans to sign a public-private partnership for the operation and maintenance of NAIA within the year. Several expressions of interest from private groups have already been received, and the government is waiting for the submission of the project proponents for the proposal. Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno said that the private sector could also help in improving the aviation infrastructure in the country. Around 80 major airport upgrade projects are expected to complete by the end of the year. Marcos Jr.’s economic team is pushing more private sector involvement in the country’s development.
