KOMPAS.com – There are two solar events directly above the Kaaba that the public can use to verify the Qibla direction this year.
Qibla direction determination using the zenith method of the Kaaba or a day without a shadow on the Kaaba or the great culmination of Mecca This is considered easier and more accurate.
Researcher from the National Aeronautics and Space Institute’s (LAPAN) Space Center (LAPAN) Andi Pangerang explained, this method provides a measurement tolerance of about half a degree so it is quite accurate.

He added that the phenomenon of the sun directly above the Kaaba occurred at noon and could only be used for certain areas of Indonesia.
“The great culmination is only used in western and central Indonesia,” said Andi when contacted by Kompas.com, Wednesday (19/1/2022).
When did it happen?
The first culmination or the sun directly above the Kaaba will occur on May 28, 2022 at 16.17 WIB or 17.17 WITA.
The second solar event above the Kaaba will occur on July 15, 2022 at 16:26 WIB or 17:26 WITA.
How to verify Qibla direction?
Andi explained that if the weather is favorable, measurements can be made no later than 30 minutes before and no later than 30 seconds after the culmination of the Kaaba at a predetermined time.
As for the measurement on a different day, it can be done no later than two days before and no later than two days after the date of the culmination of the Kaaba, at the same time.

Here’s how to determine the sun above the Qibla:
1. Determine the place where the direction of Qibla will be known, by finding a flat location and exposed to sunlight.
2. Use a straight object or stick, you can also use a bobble thread.
3. Prepare a clock that has been calibrated or matched with BMKG time.
4. Plug the stick on the ground surface and make sure it is completely upright (90 degrees from the ground surface) or hang a bobble thread.
5. Wait until the great culmination time arrives, then observe the shadow of the stick or thread at that time.
6. After that, mark the end of the shadow and draw a straight line with the center of the shadow, either a stick or a pendulum.
7. The straight line facing from the tip to the center of the shadow is the Qibla direction for the place.
For information, the great culmination event is not fixed for each year due to the apparent motion of the sun which is relatively changing when referring to the Gregorian calendar.
Even so, the phenomenon will take place in the range of May 27-28 or July 15-16, at least until the year 2071.
