The hurricane Padam Padam blew the entire planet away this summer, its contagious chorus sweeping radio waves, dance floors and social networks. No one could have predicted the scale of this phenomenon… not even Kylie Minogue herself. “I would never have dared to dream of it,” breathes the singer.
Anyone with access to a radio, an online listening platform, or even a TikTok account has heard the Australian hammer Padam Padam on all fronts in recent months. To describe the song as a simple success would be an understatement as it became a worldwide phenomenon almost instantly. And it was a stunned Kylie Minogue who was able to follow its growth in real time, through her social networks.
“No one could have anticipated such influence! It’s completely crazy,” exclaims the Australian diva in a videoconference with The newspaper.
“Watching the phenomenon grow day after day, on my screens… it was incredibly exciting. My only professional ambition is always to have a good song, a song that people like and, perhaps, a success. SO Padam Padam obviously exceeded all my expectations,” she continues, smiling.
The table was therefore well set for Tension, a 16th studio album launched with great fanfare a few days ago. And both fans and critics praised this new musical triumph by Kylie Minogue, available in 11 to 16 tracks – depending on the edition chosen – pop with electro and disco accents.
In short, the observation is obvious: the 55-year-old singer once again restores her crown as a pop princess. This was affixed to his head in the late 1980s, then firmly screwed on with successes such as Better the Devil You Know, Confide in Me, Spinning Around et Can’t Get You Out of My Head.
A new generation of fans
However, not all of his songs and albums over the last 35 years have had enough resonance to reach North America. The success of Padam Padam therefore allows a new generation to be introduced to the rich musical universe of Kylie Minogue.
“People are starting to put the pieces together; They realize I’m the one who sang “La la la” [sur Can’t Get You Out of My Head], or that their mother – and even their grandmother! – listened The Loco-Motion ! And from there, they can discover what they want in my repertoire or my career,” says Kylie Minogue.
And they have a lot to discover, the singer having been a subscriber to success since her very first album, launched in 1988. Nevertheless, the singer admits to cherishing each of her successes today, even more than when she started.
“My first albums were very popular, then it calmed down a bit, before picking up again… I had my ups and downs, which is perfectly normal. But I enjoy success even more today. I understand how difficult a job it is. And being able to surprise people, to cultivate their love, is something that moves me enormously,” she pleads.
Vegas… then Montreal?
Now that Tension has joined her audience, Kylie Minogue is preparing to add the main extracts to her very first residency in Las Vegas, scheduled for next November. However, Quebec fans do not lose hope of finding the princess of pop on our stages, after too long an absence; Kylie Minogue’s last visit to us dates back to 2011, the year when her tour Aphrodite stopped at the Bell Centre.
” I know ! It’s been way too long, I feel guilty. But I would really like to go visit you,” says the singer.
And we intend to take her at her word.
The album Tension is currently available.
