Today there is a partial solar eclipse in 2022 over Lower Saxony. The time has been set: from 11:00 fans can watch the event in the sky.
Hannover – Beware of astronomy enthusiasts: today, Tuesday 25 October, there will be a partial solar eclipse over Germany. Depending on the weather, the sky spectacle can also be observed in Lower Saxony. But what is the solar eclipse of 2022 and when can it be observed in the northern federal state?
Observe the solar eclipse today in Lower Saxony: when the partial eclipse will be visible in the sky
The last “true” solar eclipse so far occurred over Germany in 1999. Today, October 25, there will be a partial solar eclipse, during which the moon will move in front of the sun by nearly 30 percent and darken the sky. The solar eclipse of 2022 will be visible over Lower Saxony between 11:00 and 13:30. Planetologist Julia Lanz-Kröchert from Wolfsburg explained this to the German press agency.
However, many astronomy enthusiasts will not be able to see the show in Lower Saxony – the weather service predicts dense clouds over Lower Saxony at around 17 degrees Celsius. The telescopes of the Hanover Observatory also allow you to follow the solar eclipse when there is a light veil of clouds.
Partial solar eclipse: what is it?
But what exactly is a partial solar eclipse? During a solar eclipse in 2022, the moon will move in its orbit between the axis between the earth and the sun. As a result, parts of the solar disk are obscured by the Earth. However, during a partial solar eclipse such as the one that is occurring today, Tuesday 25 October, this happens only partially. The moon is able to intercept the sunlight and obscure the earth because the sun is much larger but also much further away.
Be careful when observing the 2022 solar eclipse – wear special glasses to protect your eyes
When asked whether a partial solar eclipse is a rare celestial phenomenon, there is a sobering answer: as a rule, there are up to three events in the course of a calendar year. A complete solar eclipse is much rarer – the last one was over 20 years ago. A partial solar eclipse is usually so faint that it is barely noticeable on Earth.
The time to observe the 2022 solar eclipse over Lower Saxony has been fixed for a long time, but if you want to observe the phenomenon, you should notice a few things. Ophthalmologists and experts have been warning for weeks not to observe the solar eclipse over Lower Saxony with the naked eye and recommend special glasses for the solar eclipse. There are serious health consequences. If the solar eclipse of 2022 is missed today, it can already be noticed on August 12, 2026: then there should be a partial solar eclipse, during which up to 85% of the sun could be covered.
