the petition reaches the mayor

The mobilization to “save the pine trees in Ravenna” continues: after the appeal for the 50 pine trees in Viale Romagna in Lido di Savio was filed with the Court, the citizens presented the signatures collected with the petition addressed to the mayor of Ravenna Michele de Pascale: 2500 new subscriptions which integrate the 2000 already deposited for Lido di Savio.

“Almost 5000 people, including residents and tourists, ask to safeguard the historic urban tree-lined areas: an invaluable public heritage and a precious source of ecosystem services, fundamental for preserving the climate and the health of citizens – explain the promoters of the initiative – The appeal for Lido di Savio, written by the lawyer Virginia Cuffaro, was accompanied by six reports by experts in the sector, some of the most established in Italy such as Gian Pietro Cantiani and Daniele Zanzi. The dramatic environmental emergencies underway in our Region impose that not a single tree, a source of oxygen, a trap for CO2, a valid ally for capturing pollutants and for lowering temperatures, as well as protection for biodiversity, is cut down. Not a single euro must be spent on useless works worse, harmful to the environment and to the city. Trees are primarily needed in urban centres: the older ones must be kept healthy as a precious asset. As already mentioned when filing the appeal for Lido di Savio, the right to the environment is among the fundamental human rights, also in light of the recent additions to Article 9 of the Constitution. Tampering with the integrity of the environment inevitably leads to negative health consequences.”

“The pines of Via Maggiore, in addition to belonging to an urban context of the highest quality for more than seventy years, adorning the main access road to the city, have a particular symbolic value for Ravenna, which bears the stone pine in its coat of arms” : the petition underlines this, and asks to use “all the most modern arboricultural techniques to maintain the trees (and pavements) safely and efficiently”, resorting to felling only as a last resort. The large empty gaps which increase every year and degrade the avenue, be integrated with new young pines”.

The citizens who took action would like to thank “all the commercial establishments in Via Maggiore and beyond that hosted the collection form, the San Biagio pharmacy of Doctor Pietro Gueltrini for having hosted the signature collection stand numerous times, and the many participants in the demonstrations and signatories: among them Eros Antonellini, Giuliano Babini, Eugenio Baroncelli, Mauro Bartolotti, Claudio Casadio, Mariella Delogu, Marcello Landi, Ivano Mazzani, Danilo Montanari, Pippo Tadolini and many others. The Ravenna Naturist Association, the Tree Protection Committee of Bologna and Province, the Ravenna Coordination for the Climate Outside of Fossil, Dis-Ordine, Enpa, the National Pro Natura Federation, Italia Nostra, Lipu Emilia Romagna, Oipa section of Ravenna, Reca – Emilia Climatic and Environmental Emergency Network -Romagna and WWF Ravenna. The political groups, Collettivo La Comune, Lista per Ravenna, Fratelli d’Italia, La Pigna, Potere al Popolo Ravenna, Ravenna in Comune. The Italian Touring Club has also publicly expressed its support for the pines in Via Maggiore through its Consul Beppe Rossi and Cristina Mazzavillani and Maestro Riccardo Muti have also sent their symbolic support”.
