File: Peruvian President Dina Poloarte has called for dialogue to end the demonstrations that are rocking the country as protesters call for her resignation.

“Let’s extend our hand and heart” to the protesters, Bolarte said during a press conference in Lima, urging disgruntled citizens to meet with the government to find a way out of the crisis.

Protest movements resumed on Wednesday in 26 provinces of Peru, after a temporary break during the end-of-year holidays. Protesters are demanding the resignation of Polarte, the dissolution of parliament and the immediate holding of elections. The election date was brought forward from 2026 to April 2024.

Clashes took place between security forces and protesters, while many roads were closed in several cities.

Interior Minister Victor Rojas explained that the main points of protest are in the south of the country.

“We continue to allow it and respect the right of every citizen to demonstrate,” he added.

The former vice president, Polwarte, replaced Pedro Castillo, dismissed on December 7 and accused of sedition after trying to dissolve parliament.

And 22 people have been killed and more than 600 injured since the beginning of the demonstrations, which have taken on a violent character, especially in the center and south of the country, where Castillo has many supporters.
