In the country for several weeks widespread protests are underwayin which dozens of people lost their lives.

An overwhelming majority of Peruvian congressmen supported the proposal to postpone the country’s presidential and parliamentary elections from 2026 to April 2024.

The plan also calls for the country’s current president, Dina Boluarte, to hand over power to the winner of the election in July 2024.

The changes to the electoral calendar were adopted to try to quell the violent protests that followed one another across the country throughout the month of December.

They were caused by the Congressional decision on December 7th let it go the previous president of the country, the socialist Pedro Castillo, who had threatened to dissolve the parliament. Castillo is in custody and charged with an attempted coup.

Supporters of Castillo are calling for his release and holding regular demonstrations. Authorities say at least 21 people have been killed and more than 650 injured in clashes between police and protesters.
