He added that his father’s legacy is the lasting peace in Northern Ireland, a foundation that has been laid to ensure that the country continues to move forward on a peaceful and unified basis.
John Hume Jr, who was working abroad during the negotiations, said that his father gave his life to working towards a peace deal. He said that the years leading up to the Good Friday Agreement were difficult for his father, but he remained unwavering in his commitment. Hume Jr emphasised that his father’s career was one of dedication to public service and to making his community, Derry, and the island of Ireland a better place.
The two families revealed that their fathers had to face numerous sacrifices to achieve peace in Northern Ireland. They both had to weather heavy criticism from the public and political opponents, with Mr Hume being criticised for talking to Sinn Fein and the IRA.
