KOMPAS.com – The peak of the Perseid meteor shower will occur on Sunday (13/8/2023) at 00.14-05.36 WIB.
This phenomenon occurs when the Earth orbits the Sun and often passes through the cosmic dust region in the solar system.
Reporting from Space, Royal Museums Greenwich states there are more than 100 meteors per hour that are expected to fall to earth.
Not surprisingly, many meteor hunters are looking forward to this phenomenon.
So, is the Perseid meteor shower dangerous?
The Perseid meteor shower is harmless
Astronomy and astrophysics researcher at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Clara Yono Yatini, said that the hundreds of meteors that fell to Earth were not dangerous.
“(Perseid meteor shower) is not dangerous. There will be no impact on Earth,” he said when confirmed by Kompas.com, Saturday (12/8/2023).
Meanwhile, Head of the Space Research Center for the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Emanuel Sungging revealed that the Perseid meteor shower phenomenon has a positive impact on Earth.
“The impact is beautiful scenery, can be for tourist destinations,” he told Kompas.com, Saturday.
Moreover, this space phenomenon can be witnessed with the naked eye.
Astronomy and astrophysicist at the National Aeronautics and Space Agency Research Center for Space Research, Thomas Djamaluddin, explains why this meteor shower is harmless to Earth.
When it falls to Earth, the meteor shower, which is often associated with the Swift-Tuttle comet, is in the form of small particles.
“Comet dust that enters Earth is only the size of sand and burns up at an altitude of about 80 kilometers,” he explained when contacted by Kompas.com, Saturday.
