Yiannis Alafouzou’s strange decisions bring a backlash to Panathinaikos
The home defeat of Panathinaikos by Aris in the 8th game of the playoffs (1-0) drastically changed the thoughts of Yannis Alafouzou and turned the clock backwards for Fatih Terim on the team’s bench. The “greens” remain without a league title for the 14th season, the Turkish coach failed in their big goal and everything shows that he is finished. And if the “clover” had not qualified for the final of the Cup, where on May 25th it will face Aris at the Panthessaliko Stadium, Terim might have returned prematurely and ingloriously to its homeland.
However, the No. 1 problem in Panathinaikos is not the choices of Fatih Terim or, in the recent past, Ivan Jovanovic. The No. 1 problem in the team for the last twelve years is that the unanswered scrimmages are not taught to G. Alafuzos, who almost every year wins the statuette corresponding to the most unsuccessful factor in the Super League. His decisions are different, with Jovanovic’s dismissal last December being the highlight. Football science threw up its hands and at the time of the 2023-24 season fund it turns out that the removal of the Serbian manager was wrong.

Jovanovic, who also had his mistakes, put Panathinaikos on the map of the championship again last year and in the current season, and Alafuzos, with an incomprehensible decision, kicked him out to bring in the disarmed Terim. The Serb was sacked at Christmas and Alafouzos stated midweek (in “Athens Voice”) that “we had started looking since October for available coaches, because I could see that things were starting to go bad. I could see that in the tough games we didn’t have the drive and passion we needed to try to win. After Maccabi I decided that the change must be made…”. The change was made, but Panathinaikos is still weak competitively, even though it has a very complete roster by the standards of Greek football. There is money in the team, but titles are not coming…
mr Sky has spent tens of millions of euros to build a debt-free competitive team but has not supported a single plan. He claims that he has spent 130 million euros on the green PAE and as a result his… investment did not pay off. And how should it perform when projects are created which are dismantled by the major shareholder, as happened with coaches Yannis Anastasiou, Marino Ouzounidis, Giorgos Donis and lastly Yovanovits?
Damn right from the start
The tenure of the 67-year-old businessman in the “clover” confirms the saying of Thanasis Giannakopoulos, who during the time of multi-shareholding in PAE had said that money does not bring happiness in football. And Alafouzos has only experienced happy days at Panathinaikos. After the resounding defeat in the hunt for the title by Aris last Sunday, the team’s fans “exploded” wildly on social media Alafuzo, Terim, as well as the players. For example, some of the comments: “Only bitterness. Dissolve it to finish”, “Shame and shame”, “You loose! From the president to the coach and the players, the coats you brought”, “You have taken our souls for so many years”, “The management is non-existent, it has been mocking us for so many years”, “As long as Alafouzos is there, we will not see a championship”, “14 years without championship and we continue steadily”. Steadfast in failure, as success is almost an unknown word for Panathinaikos, which next season is expected to go with a new coach…
