The Perfect Venue: Landestheater Oberpfalz Finds a New Home in the Old Weidener Ring Cinema

With the three sold-out performances of “Pfui! The Landestheater Oberpfalz has now achieved a brilliant, but at the same time “soft” debut in the new main venue. Because it was actually only planned for November as the second part of the cultural autumn. Like the premiere in January, the revival of the Klankermeier piece was to take place in the youth center (Juz).
“With the relatively large ensemble with many amateur actors, it was difficult to initially find at least three dates and then a venue,” says Christian Schnell. For the artistic director of the LTO, the old Ring cinema was a stroke of luck – as was the venue itself for the State Theater. “Thanks to the collaboration with the Sündikat, we now have a ‘black box’ for at least the next three to five years, which the LTO had longed for for its ambitious theater since its inception.” With 40 to 50 theater evenings per year.
Unique atmosphere
What was once the largest cinema in Weiden is also perfect for the Klankermeier saga. “The 1950s atmosphere of the hall and the foyer match the style of the piece.” Also for the next production “Spatz und Engel”, which Schnell is already looking forward to as director. The special friendship between Marlene Dietrich and Edith Piaf will also be played in “Sünde” after the first performances in Vohenstrauß in November.
A “chamber musical” with unforgettable chansons by world stars that Weiden theater fans in particular can look forward to. The former Ring cinema doesn’t just score points with its ambience. “The acoustics are great, something special for the audience, but also for us actors,” enthuses Tobias Schmauß, who plays a sleazy demimonde in “Klankermeier”. That’s what Schnell means too. “It is ideal for spoken theater – whether with a microport or even without it. A good sound right down to the last row.”
Will Klankermeier come back?
Only one drop of bitterness falls on the all-round successful start: no additional performances for the Klankermeier saga are planned for the time being. So there is no longer a chance for the theater fans who have so far come away empty-handed when rushing for tickets to see the “Weidener Play”?
“You should never say never,” smiles Schnell. “We definitely won’t be able to play it again this season. But maybe it will work again in the 24/25 season. Let’s see.” The fans can hope: Because on the LTO’s newly designed homepage, a stamp with two laughing theater masks announces in the description of the piece: “Perhaps it will come again.” Then again in “Sin” – but this time it was planned that way.
