The people of Olomouc remembered the events of August 21, 1968

It is important to remind the young generation of similar events, all the speakers agreed in their speeches. It also shows current events in the world. “For us, this day means painful memories of lost freedoms, of lost hopes. And it was on hope that fifty-six years ago society tried to build the future of us, our nation and future generations. It was a period of fear, a period of oppression, but also of determination, courage and striving for freedom. The brave people who stood up to this injustice and whom we commemorate here today have become role models for us, for future generations. Thanks to them, we managed to build our future on the aforementioned hope. We are grateful and thank them for their bravery and determination, which showed us that freedom is not a matter of course, but is a value that we must fight for and constantly worry about,” said Olomouc Deputy Mayor Viktor Tichák.

The day of commemoration of the victims of the invasion in 1968 and the subsequent occupation by the troops of the Warsaw Pact was approved by the Senate as a Significant Day. The Memorial Day of the Invasion Victims is a tribute to all those who had to suffer the events of 1968 and the subsequent normalization. On Žižka square in front of the monument to the first president of TGM and in front of the building of the former Soviet headquarters, now the building of the Faculty of Education, there is a plaque commemorating the events of August 1968. The plaque was created thanks to the members of the Military Association of Rehabilitated ACR in Olomouc.
