How did you get started in the world of graffiti?
It was in 2005 that I first picked up a spray can. Although I already painted before, with a brush, canvas … it was a friend who brought me closer to this urban art. When I met him I knew what I wanted to do. I started in alleys, running from the Police (because it is an illegal activity), until in 2007 my first order arrived to decorate the interior of a local. From there my professional career began.
As a result, you have done large-scale work. Murals for both schools and the facades of town halls, could it be said that the art of graffiti is being increasingly recognized in society?
Going from graffiti to muralism is a very big leap. Normally people do not expect the result of a mural. He is still surprised when he sees how a piece of art on the wall can come out of a spray. But he accepts it and usually enchants it. For this reason, more and more people are interested. From the private sector to the public. As, luckily, in Huelva they respect my work, my works in the street usually last a long time. So I can offer a guarantee that my jobs will stay. In fact, I have murals on the street that are already old. This does not happen in any other city in Spain or in the world. That is a privilege that I have in my land.
How would you define your style?
I’ve always liked realism, but after I had been doing it for a while it started to tire me. Looking for that realism is always a headache with which you do not feel as fulfilled as when you create your own work. For this reason, my work has derived in an impressionist realism, giving a lot of color to the works, giving ground sections, giving it a ease that makes me enjoy the work itself a lot.
Where do you think your works shine the most?
Outdoors and in large places. I am looking to pull large spaces, since a work indoors is only left for the owner of the space. But doing a work in the street and that everyone can contemplate it, with such large dimensions, is what motivates the most. The large dimensions catch you.
Besides Huelva, have you painted in other cities?
Yes, even outside of Spain. Thanks to the National Graffiti League I am traveling a lot throughout the country, along with other great artists. I have also been to Greece, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Portugal … they have even invited me to an event in Uruguay. An appointment that, because of the Covid, has been paralyzed for the moment but in which I will be soon. The truth is that I am seeing that everything is taking off. I have spent a long time on the airstrip doing many things, although not all that I would like and now I see that everything is starting to get higher. I currently have no place on the agenda until January.
What future do you see for this art?
Well right now is my future. I was trained as an interior designer and as a graphic designer, but I learned this on the street and it is what feeds me. It is what I live for, it is my passion, I enjoy it every moment and I would like it to continue being that way. But you never know how people will continue to embrace or understand it, as it is very difficult.
How do you face your participation in the National Graffiti League that will take place in Huelva from next September 17?
This is the second year that I have participated and I am really looking forward to it. It seeks to bring urban art, muralism and graffiti to the general citizen. Through photographs they ask us to do a new work on the street. It encourages you to renew yourself, to paint new things, not to pull galleries … it is an appointment that has had a great reception and in which I remain among the top 10. Last year I was sixth and this year I am ninth. I am very happy because people have turned to me.
Are you excited to compete with the best in your land?
Apart from illusion it is a responsibility. I have to give my all because people are used to seeing my works on the street, so what I do has to be even better. I compete with the best, so it will be difficult but at the same time exciting.
What inspires you the most in Huelva when making your works?
Many. The color of the sunsets in Huelva, the gastronomic wealth, its fauna (I move around a lot doing animal things) … there are many factors that influence when making a work but my land is always present.
How do you think Huelva welcomes the art of graffiti?
I think better now, but for many years we have been the ass of urban art in the world. It is an illegal art with a fine and even jail. It’s difficult because Huelva has always been an old-fashioned city. But for about eight years now there has been a great change. It is increasingly welcomed and it is understood that it is something that beautifies the city, on many occasions, altruistically. People think of graffiti as signing or getting paint dirty and what we do is not that anymore. We make urban art with the graffiti technique.
