The new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, has announced that he is reinstating former US President Donald Trump’s social network account after he promoted a poll that was in favor of the decision.
«People have spoken. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei“, Musk announced through his official account.
Musk promoted a 24-hour poll that ended this Saturday to ask If former US President Donald Trump were to return to the social networkwho was suspended indefinitely from the platform after linking his comments to the storming of the Capitol.
According to the results Musk released from the survey he received 15,085,458 votes, 51.8% favored restoring Trump’s account, while 48.2% did against it.
In early November, Musk said Twitter “won’t allow” anyone removed from the social network for violating its rules to return to the platform until the company has a clear process.
The tycoon, who bought the network for $44 billion, also said in a series of tweets that “Twitter’s content moderation board will include representatives with widely differing viewpoints, which will undoubtedly include the civil rights community.” and groups fighting hate-fueled violence.
In his tweet published after the poll, Musk hinted with the message “Vox Populi, Vox Dei!” (Latin phrase meaning “the voice of the people is the voice of God”), that the return of Trump – who announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election this week – will depend on the result of the poll.
Before buying the social network, Musk he said one of the people he would welcome to Twitter is former President Donald Trump.
Yesterday, Musk announced the unblocking of the Twitter accounts of writer Jordan Peterson, comedian Kathy Griffin and conservative parody outlet The Babylon Bee.
Peterson and Babylon Bee’s profiles were blocked for posting content that did not respect the trans community, while Griffin’s was removed for impersonating Musk.
