The Pentagon’s failed officers: The training system is getting worse – 2024-05-10 10:38:06

/ world today news/ The generals from the Pentagon have a new headache – American youth refuse to serve in the US armed forces. The shortfall for the Ground Forces alone in 2022 is over 14,000. Things are no better in other types of armed forces and military formations.

This would not be so scary if at the same time there was not a record outflow of experienced sergeants and soldiers from the army.

Trying to explain this phenomenon, experts came across the fact that the traditional source of recruits – children from military families – is also drying up.

On the contrary, veterans who served in the military are now advising their relatives and friends not to serve in the military. One of the reasons is the decline of general military culture in the troops. This is due to the decline in the quality of the officer corps.

Already in 2016, everything was clear and the alarm should have been raised. A series of reports showed that the average IQ, the IQ of officers, and the quality of education and training had fallen sharply. According to statistics, test scores for second lieutenants in the Marine Corps have been declining for 40 years.

By 2016 standards, two-thirds of naval officers performed poorly. While in 1980 they were only 30 percent. If we take the level of requirements for officers in World War II, then 41% of officers for 2016 will fail to qualify. The percentage of excellent students is also much lower compared to previous years.

None of this is a surprise to me. During my military career in the US Army from 1993 to 2004, I personally observed a marked deterioration in the quality of junior officers.

My last position was as a military instructor at Fort Bragg Officers Academy (Fort Bragg, North Carolina). Each military unit had to send there a quota of the best junior and middle sergeants.

Of course, the system of quality selection from the best does not work. Military units preparing to deploy to Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria did not send their best sergeants to training. But the quota was behind them and was full of “junk” they wanted to get rid of.

At the same time, instructors at Fort Bragg Academy (I was an instructor) were prohibited from excluding poor students because it lowered the academy’s performance indicators and created a negative background for the academy.

To this ballast we must add a large number of sons and daughters of generals, colonels and politicians who absolutely could not fail exams and drop out of courses.

I remember when I myself went through a cadet camp. It was a two-month test, the results of which determined the future of the young officer.

From the beginning of the second week, we are asked to name all close relatives who have the officer rank of colonel or higher or hold high political positions. They explained this to us as the need to organize a special meeting and program for these people at the final ceremony.

Of course, everyone understood what this meant, and of course “purebred” children or grandchildren could not fail the tests.

Three such candidates came from my institute. Two twins, “maniacs”, without any military qualities. Both completed the course, even if it meant serving as reserve officers. Their father was a colonel.

The third is the daughter of a colonel and a senator. Her character was disgusting. She was suspended from classes, but was then quickly given the opportunity to return to school the following year, which was also considered impossible for a mere mortal.

There was also a system of racial quotas, according to which an officer’s qualities were not as important as his race. And all this happened long before they started introducing quotas on the LGBT+ agenda.

Intellectually underdeveloped or unfit officers not only make poor tactical decisions, but also create a very negative military culture. After all, they climb the career ladder, but they are unlikely to bring with them junior officers smarter than themselves.

Thus, the combat capability of the army of the “world hegemon” is falling faster and faster.
