The Pentagon announced that American warship On Wednesday morning, while sailing in the southern Red Sea, it shot down an Iranian-made drone launched from an area in Yemen controlled by Houthi rebels loyal to Tehran.
The US Central Military Command (Centcom) said in a statement that, at approximately 11:00 Sanaa time, while sailing in the southern Red Sea, the destroyer Karni, equipped with guided missiles, shot down “an Iranian-made Cas-04 drone that was launched from the areas where Controlled by the Houthis in Yemen.
The statement added, “Although its intentions are unknown, the march was heading toward the warship.”
Centcom confirmed that the American forces did not suffer any losses in personnel or equipment as a result of shooting down the march.
Last week, the Pentagon announced that an American destroyer, while sailing in the waters of the Red Sea, intercepted numerous explosive drones launched from Yemen from areas controlled by the Houthis.
The Houthis, who control large parts of Yemen, have launched a series of drones and a number of missiles since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7.
American warships deployed in the region shot down a number of these drones and missiles.
On Wednesday, the foreign ministers of the G7 countries called on the Houthis in Yemen to “immediately stop” threatening maritime transport, and to release the crew of a cargo ship they seized in the Red Sea ten days ago.
The Houthis seized this commercial ship with its 25-member crew on November 19, in an attack they said they launched in response to the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The war broke out between Israel and Hamas following an unprecedented attack launched by the movement on the south of the Hebrew state, which led to the killing of about 1,200 people, the majority of whom were civilians, most of whom died on the first day of the attack, according to the Israeli authorities.
In turn, Israel launched an air, ground and sea bombardment campaign in Gaza that killed nearly 15,000 people, most of whom were also civilians, according to Hamas officials, and turned large parts of the northern Gaza Strip into rubble.
A temporary truce has been in effect for a week between Israel and Hamas, allowing the fighting to stop, humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip, and Hamas to release dozens of Israeli hostages, in exchange for Israel releasing three times that number of Palestinian prisoners.
