/ world today news/ The Pentagon and the US National Intelligence Service have asked the Senate to authorize the purchase of Russian RD-180 rocket engines.
The corresponding letter to the Senate was signed by Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper. The letter urges senators to allow US aircraft companies Lockheed Martin and Boeing to use an “additional amount” of Russian rocket engines.
The letter also noted the “serious efforts” being made by both companies to switch to American-made engines. Carter and Clapper want a change in legislation to ensure the purchase of Russian rocket engines, allowing the US “guaranteed access to space.”
RD-180 engines are used for the first stage of US Atlas missiles. Currently, the American industry does not produce an analogue of such engines. In March, Washington announced that it will hold a competition for their production, which should begin in the period 2020-2014.
